Hey friends! Amanda Dillon of Mettle Modern Design shared a gorgeous, relaxing DIY project using stains and stencils to create a coastal sunset backdrop. Whether you're new to staining or a seasoned maker, this layered scene brings sunshine to any decor or mixed media piece. Let's dive into the steps!
Use a sponge to apply white stain across the entire board for a soft foundation.
Tape off the middle of the board and apply Oasis Blue stain below the tape. This becomes your water.
Once dry, tape just above the blue section to prep your sunset area.
Use Honey Yellow for the sun center and Coral around it. Spritz with water to help blend.
Remove tape and blend the horizon where water meets sky using a flat brush.
Use the Grass Stencil on both lower corners in Raw Umber or black for soft, shadowy detail.
Let dry completely. This background is perfect for resin, sailboats, vinyl words, or seasonal accents.
