πŸ‚ A Little Fall Magic: Create a Charming Heirloom Harvest Door Hanger

Give your front door a cozy fall update with this beautiful heirloom-inspired door hanger! Renee from Flip Flop Furnishings Custom Sign and Home Decor Artistry combines soft pastel blue paint, vintage-inspired stripes, layered rub-on transfers, and faded French script to create a 16-inch round with plenty of rustic charm.

The best part? You can customize the placement of the transfer pieces to create a look that's completely your own. Renee's technique of layering the transfers with the French script creates the look of an aged, collected piece.

Materials

Create the Painted Background

Start with a 16-inch round wood board. Using a damp sponge, apply Fusion Mineral Paint in Heirloom, a soft pastel blue. Spread the paint evenly across the surface.

Renee uses a damp sponge because it creates a soft, slightly transparent finish that allows some of the natural wood grain to show through.

Once the paint is completely dry, lightly sand the board with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe away all sanding residue with a clean towel.

Next, create vertical stripes using painter's tape. Use a small piece of tape as a spacer to help keep the stripes evenly sized.

With a chip brush, dry brush Cathedral Taupe onto the exposed sections. Don't worry about full coverage. A lighter application helps create the soft, rustic look you're after.

Once the taupe paint is dry, lightly brush white paint over the taupe sections. This creates a soft, two-toned effect.

Carefully remove the painter's tape and let the paint dry completely. Give the entire surface another light sanding to blend and distress the background.

Add the Heirloom Harvest Transfers

Now it's time for the fun part! Before applying anything, lay out the pieces from the Heirloom Harvest Market Transfer Set and experiment with your arrangement.

Taking a few minutes to play with the placement first makes it much easier to create a balanced finished design.

Begin with the two large pumpkin designs. Cut them out, remove the backing, and position them in the center of the board.

Applying the large pumpkin rub-on transfers

Use the Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool to burnish the designs onto the wood.

Work around the edges first, then make sure you've rubbed over the entire design. Slowly lift the carrier sheet. If a section doesn't release, simply lay the sheet back down and burnish that area again.

Don't be afraid to piece your transfers together. You can layer and combine individual elements to create a custom design that looks like one large transfer.

Next, cut out a floral bouquet and the "Grateful Thankful Blessed" tag. Position them along the top edge of the board and burnish them into place.

Add the "Heirloom Pumpkin Co." tag along the bottom edge of the board.

Finally, cut out the decorative border from the transfer set and position it just above the pumpkins. Burnish it carefully to adhere the design.

Layer on the French Script

With the transfer elements in place, bring in the Large French Script Stencil.

Position the stencil at a slight angle across the board. Using black paint and a stencil brush, lightly apply the script around the transfer designs.

Applying faded French script with a stencil

Use a very dry brush and a light touch. You're not looking for bold, solid lettering. The goal is for the French script to softly peek through the background and add another layer of vintage character.

It's perfectly fine if some of the script overlaps the transfers. That little bit of overlap helps the layers look naturally aged instead of perfectly separated.

Sand and Finish

Once the script is dry, give the entire board one final light sanding. Focus especially on the lettering to soften the black paint and create that beautifully faded, rustic appearance.

To finish the piece, apply a layer of clear wax over the entire board using a shop towel.

The wax enhances the colors of the transfers while helping protect the finished design from everyday wear.

Helpful Tips

  • Use a damp sponge for the first coat. This gives the Heirloom paint a softer finish and allows some wood grain to remain visible.
  • Keep your stripe paint light. Dry brushing rather than applying heavy coverage helps maintain the vintage feel.
  • Plan your transfers before burnishing. Lay all the pieces on the board first so you can adjust the composition.
  • Burnish thoroughly. Pay special attention to the edges. If a piece doesn't release, put the carrier sheet back down and rub that area again.
  • Layer your transfers. Combining individual pieces gives you more freedom to create a custom arrangement.
  • Use a very dry brush for the French script. Light application creates a soft, aged effect instead of overpowering the transfers.
  • Sand selectively. A final light sanding helps blend the layers and gives the lettering that beautifully faded appearance.
