Sometimes the best decor pieces are the ones that feel timeless. This cheerful round wood sign is one of those projects. It works beautifully after the holidays, through winter, and honestly all year long. Using layered stencils, soft stain washes, and a simple phrase, this project comes together easily but makes a big impact.
This project was created by Renee of Flip Flop Furnishings, an Essential Stencil enthusiast who loves clean lines, bright color, and approachable DIY techniques.

Start with a 16" round board. The upper and bottom sections should already be pre-stained in brown for a soft, natural base.

Place strips of tape along both edges of the stained section. Using a wet wipe or damp rag, apply white paint to the remaining areas, allowing the wood grain to show through. Let dry and apply a second coat if needed. Carefully remove the tape.

Select one house design from the Saltbox Houses stencil pack and tape it in the center of the board. Using a stencil brush, fill the first layer with green paint. Lift the stencil.

Reposition the same stencil to align the second layer. Fill with black paint using a clean brush, then lift the stencil.

Choose another house design and position it on one side of the board. Fill the first layer with yellow paint and lift the stencil.

Reposition the stencil, align the second layer, and fill with black paint.

Place the final house on the opposite side of the board. Fill the first layer with bright sky blue paint.

Align the second layer and fill with black paint, applying a second coat if needed.

Position the Love Makes a House a Home stencil at the bottom of the board. Fill only the words “makes a house a home” with black paint.

Reposition the stencil at the top of the board and fill only the word “love.”

Using the heart from the same stencil set, position it at the end of the word “love” and stencil with black paint.

Reposition the heart just below the phrase for balance.

Once everything is fully dry, lightly sand the surface using fine sandpaper or a brown paper bag for a smooth, cohesive finish.
