There’s something timeless about a moon-and-stars project. Soft blends, a little shimmer, and a meaningful phrase can turn a simple wood surface into a keepsake. Today we’re walking through this dreamy Love You to the Moon and Back sign created by Essential Stencil ambassador Cindy from Berry Jam Crafts.
This project is perfect for Valentine’s Day, a child’s room, or everyday home decor. The background is forgiving, the stencil does the heavy lifting, and the finish is stunning.

1. Prep your surface.
Start with a clean, dry, dust-free 12x12 wood sign holder. This ensures smooth paint application and crisp stencil lines.

2. Create the ombre night sky.
Apply white, turquoise, and dark blue paint directly onto the board. Using a chip brush, blend the colors together with light strokes. Add a small amount of water if needed to soften transitions.
Don’t overwork the paint. Let the brush do the blending for a natural, cloudy sky effect.

Allow the background to dry completely.
3. Stencil the moon and stars.
Once dry, center the stencil and secure it with tape. Using a stencil brush, boldly fill in the moon and stars with gold paint.

Let dry before adding detail.
4. Add shimmer and dimension.
Apply a second coat using gold metallic paint on the stars and pearl metallic paint on the moon. This subtle layering adds depth and glow.

5. Stencil the wording.
Using a clean stencil brush, fill in the words with mermaid tail paint. Carefully lift the stencil and allow the design to dry.

6. Finish with soft detail.
With the remaining mermaid tail paint, lightly dry brush along the top and bottom edges of the board for a finished, cohesive look.
