🍀 A Little Luck, A Lot of Love, and Plenty of Shenanigans

There’s something about St. Patrick’s Day projects that just feel happy. This sweet little wood sign is simple to make, full of texture, and perfect for adding a touch of charm to your seasonal decor. Amanda Dillon of Mettle Modern Design walks us through this raised stencil technique using Essential Stencil’s “Love and Shenanigans” design — and it’s a technique you’ll want to use again and again.

This Home Is Built on Love and Shenanigans

    Materials Needed:

    Step 1: Stain the Base

Start by staining an 8×10 wood cradle panel using a sponge and white stain. Be sure to cover the front and sides evenly. Allow it to dry completely.

    Step 2: Sand Smooth

Once dry, lightly sand the board to create a smooth surface for stenciling. This helps prevent paint bleed and gives a clean finish.

    Step 3: Stencil the Wording

Place the Love and Shenanigans stencil onto the board and secure it with tape. Using a stencil brush, apply black paint to the wording with a light swirling motion. Add a second coat for a bolder finish, then allow it to dry.

    Step 4: Add Raised Shamrocks

Mix light molding paste with green acrylic paint. Using a spatula, carefully fill in the shamrock areas of the stencil. This step adds beautiful 3D texture and makes the design really stand out. Let it dry completely before removing the stencil.

    Helpful Tips:
    • Lift the stencil straight up to avoid smudging raised paste.
    • Light layers of paint prevent bleed-through.
    • Molding paste holds pigment better than standard spackle.
    • Once fully dry, you can lightly sand raised areas if needed.

    Final Reveal

This finished piece is simple, charming, and full of personality — just like the sentiment itself.
