Harvest Blessing Vintage Plaque

For this project, we’re starting with an 11" x 9" decorative wood plaque. The finished look comes from layering a rich green paint color, a light dry-brushed finish, the Harvest Blessing transfer, and a decorative mould with aged gold accents.

1. Prepare and Paint the Plaque

Start with an 11" x 9" decorative wood plaque. Make sure the surface is clean and completely dry before painting.

Paint the entire plaque with Carriage House Green, including the edges. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before moving on.

2. Add a Soft Distressed Finish

Once the green paint is dry, lightly dry brush white paint over the surface. Keep your hand light and let some of the green show through.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. The variation is what helps create that soft, aged look.

Let the paint dry completely. Then lightly sand the surface with 250-grit sandpaper to blend the layers and create a smooth, weathered finish.

Wipe away all sanding residue before applying the transfer. A clean, dry surface that is free of dust and oils helps the transfer adhere properly.

3. Prepare the Harvest Blessing Transfer

Take the Harvest Blessing design from the Heirloom Harvest Transfer Set.

Carefully cut away the decorative top border. Set that piece aside so you can save it for another project.

4. Apply the Transfer

Position the Harvest Blessing design onto the plaque, leaving a little space at the top for the decorative mould.

Once you’re happy with the placement, carefully burnish the transfer. Start around the lettering and gradually work across the rest of the design.

The Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool makes it easy to apply steady pressure as you work.

Take your time as you burnish. Make sure the entire design has released and adhered before lifting away the transfer film.

5. Age the Decorative Mould

Now it’s time to add some dimension. Take a decorative mould piece that has been pre-painted white and apply a small amount of dark wax.

Work the wax into the details, then wipe away the excess with a shop towel. The darker wax settles into the recessed areas and helps highlight the mould’s texture.

6. Add Gold Shimmer and Attach the Mould

Lightly apply antique gold shimmer to the raised areas of the mould. This catches the details and gives the piece a subtle vintage glow.

Once you’re happy with the finish, apply hot glue or your preferred adhesive to the back of the mould. Attach it to the open space at the top of the plaque.

7. Finish with Gold Accents

For the finishing touch, use that same antique gold shimmer to lightly accent the edges of the plaque.

Start with a small amount and build the shimmer gradually. A light touch keeps the gold looking aged and subtle instead of overpowering the design.

Helpful Tips

  • Let every paint layer dry completely before sanding or applying the transfer.
  • Use a light hand when dry brushing the white paint. You can always add more, but it’s harder to take it away.
  • Clean away all sanding dust before applying your transfer.
  • Leave some open space above the transfer when positioning it so the mould has room to sit naturally.
  • Burnish the transfer slowly and carefully, especially around lettering and detailed areas.
  • When using dark wax, start with a small amount. It’s easier to build up the aged effect than to remove too much.
  • Apply gold shimmer lightly to create highlights without covering the mould’s details.
