If you love soft pinks with a little depth, this Valentine project is for you. In today’s tutorial, Essential Stencil ambassador Amanda Dillon of Mettle Modern Design shares how to create a layered Valentine sign using blended stains, bold black lettering, and a beautiful rub-on transfer finish.
This project is a great example of how one versatile background technique can work beautifully with both stencils and transfers. It’s approachable, budget-friendly, and perfect for seasonal decorating.

Step 1: Create the Base
Start by staining an 8x10” wood panel with white stain using a stain sponge. Be sure to include the sides.

Step 2: Add the Coral Stain
Grab a clean sponge, dip it into coral stain, and apply it to about half of the board.

Step 3: Blend the Ombre
Blend the white and coral stains together using light circular motions. Lightly spritz with water to help the colors soften and move. Add more white or coral until you’re happy with the transition. Let dry completely.

Step 4: Stencil the Word “Love”
Position the stencil horizontally near the top of the board. Using a stencil brush and black paint, stencil only the word “Love.” Carefully lift the stencil and dry the paint.

Step 5: Add “Makes a House”
Reposition the stencil so “makes a house” sits just below “Love.” Stencil with black paint and lift.

Step 6: Finish with “A Home”
Once dry, reposition the stencil again and paint “a home” below. Allow to dry fully.

Step 7: Apply the Rub-On Transfer
Cut out the floral truck design from the Chinoiserie Valentine Rub-on Transfer set. Place it at the bottom of the board and burnish using the transfer tool.

Step 8: Lightly Distress
Lightly sand the surface for a smooth, finished look.
