Vintage Grocery Sign with Chippy Milk Paint Background

    Materials Needed

    • Scrap wood board
    • Brown acrylic paint
    • Milk paint (white or light neutral)
    • Water and mixing container
    • Soft clear wax or Vaseline
    • Heat gun or blow dryer
    • Sanding block or sandpaper
    • Grocery 16"x5" Stencil Set
    • Detail Brush Set (6pk)
    • Stencil brush
    • Paper towels or cloth

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Mix the Milk Paint: Combine milk paint powder and water in a container. Stir well until smooth.
    2. Paint the Base: Coat your wood with brown paint, including the sides. Let it dry completely.
    3. Apply Wax: Rub clear wax around the edges where you want a distressed effect.
    4. Apply Milk Paint: Brush on your mixed milk paint. Let dry completely. Add another coat if desired for more texture.
    5. Sand for a Chippy Look: Lightly sand the edges and raised areas to reveal the brown base underneath.
    6. Stencil the Word "Grocery": Position the stencil and stencil lightly using brown paint for a worn-in look.
    7. Detail the Letters: Use a detail brush to fill in bridges and polish the final look.
    8. Final Distressing: Lightly sand over the stenciled letters to enhance the vintage vibe.

    Helpful Tips

    • Always apply wax before milk paint to ensure the crackle effect works correctly.
    • If your paint isn’t chipping as expected, use a heat gun to help the paint bubble and flake.
    • Milk paint must be sealed to protect the finish.
    • Use scrap wood to practice the chippy technique before committing to your final board.
