Spring Bird Round Sign Tutorial

Materials

Step 1: Section the Board

Start by sectioning your 18" round board. Mark the center with a pencil, then use painter’s tape to divide the board into three sections, creating a center stripe to guide your design.

Step 2: Paint the Top and Bottom Sections

Paint the top and bottom sections with white paint. Allow the paint to dry completely before applying a second coat for fuller coverage.

Step 3: Paint the Center Section

Once the white paint is dry, remove the tape and reposition it to protect the painted areas. Paint the center stripe with a soft mint green color and allow it to dry completely.

Step 4: Smooth the Surface

Lightly sand the surface for a smooth finish, then remove the tape. Wipe away any dust or residue before moving to the next step.

Step 5: Stencil the Spring Meadow Design

Secure the Spring Meadow Stencil to the center stripe. Using a stencil brush and blue paint, fill in the lettering. Let the paint dry before lifting the stencil.

Step 6: Add a Shadow Layer

Reposition the same stencil slightly lower to create a shadow effect. Use yellow paint to add a soft layered dimension. Apply a second coat if needed.

Step 7: Apply Bird Transfers

Cut out several birds and floral designs from the Blooming Birdies Rub-On Transfer Set. Randomly place them across the board and burnish them using the Essential Transfer Tool.

Step 8: Add a Floral Background

Place the Dainty Flower Pattern Stencil over the center stripe. Use white paint to create a soft, subtle background pattern.

Step 9: Distress the Edges

Lightly brush brown paint along the edges of the round sign to give it a gentle rustic finish.

Step 10: Add Playful Details

Using a dotting tool and pale pink paint, randomly add small dots around the design for a fun spring accent.

Final Reveal

This sweet spring round combines soft color blocking, layered stenciling, and delicate birds to create a cheerful seasonal sign.

Helpful Tips
  • Use light layers of paint when stenciling to prevent bleeding.
  • Burnish transfers slowly so every detail releases cleanly.
  • Layering stencil shadows is an easy way to add depth and dimension.
  • Soft distressing on the edges helps the sign feel more rustic and finished.
