Highland Cow & Sunflower Welcome Sign

Inspired by classic farmhouse charm and western-inspired dรฉcor, this layered stencil design combines a sweet Highland cow, bright sunflowers, and welcoming lettering. The registration marks make alignment simple, allowing you to build beautiful dimension with just a few paint colors.

Materials Needed

Step 1: Apply Layer 1

Position Layer 1 of the stencil onto your stained 12-inch round board.

Highland Cow Layer 1

Using a stencil brush, fill the cow's head with a warm yellow-brown paint color.

Stencil Leaves

With a separate brush, stencil the leaves using a muted green shade. Apply a second coat if needed for full coverage.

Stencil Welcome

Using another clean brush, stencil the word "Welcome" with brown paint. Allow the paint to dry completely before removing the stencil.

Step 2: Add Layer 2 Details

Layer 2 Details

Once Layer 1 is dry, align Layer 2 using the registration marks. Apply rich brown paint to create the cow's darker features and sunflower centers. This layer adds depth and definition to the overall design.

Step 3: Apply Layer 3 Highlights

Layer 3 Highlights

Position Layer 3 and carefully align it with the previous layers. Use an off-white paint to add highlights and detail to the cow.

Sunflower Petals

Stencil the sunflower petals with bright yellow paint. Once dry, remove the stencil to reveal the finished layered artwork.

This is the stage where the design truly comes to life and begins to resemble hand-painted artwork.

Step 4: Create a Shadow Effect

Shadow Effect

For an extra finishing touch, reposition the Welcome stencil, aligning it first and then shifting it slightly upward and to the side. Apply white paint to create a subtle shadow effect behind the lettering.

This simple technique adds dimension and helps the word stand out beautifully.
