Sharon Hankins from I Restore Stuff is back with another fun and beginner-friendly project. This time, she’s creating a bold and beautiful patriotic sign using the Old Glory Vintage Truck stencil set.
This project uses just two stencil layers, making it perfect if you’re newer to layering—or just want something simple with a big impact.
Step 1: Prep + Placement
Start by placing Layer 1 of the stencil onto your black-painted board. Use a pen or marker to mark the X registration guides on painter’s tape—this will help you perfectly align your second layer later.
Step 2: Paint the Truck (Red Base)
Using a stencil brush, fill one half of the truck with your red paint. Be sure to offload your brush and use a dry brush technique to prevent bleeding. Apply a second coat for richer color.
Step 3: Add Blue Shimmer
Switch to a mini stencil brush and fill the other half of the truck using a blue shimmer paint. This adds a beautiful contrast and subtle shine.
Step 4: Stencil the Wording
Use an off-white paint to fill in the wording. Keep your layers light and controlled. Let the paint dry slightly, then carefully lift the stencil.
Step 5: Align + Apply Layer 2
Line up Layer 2 using your registration marks. This step is key to getting a clean, professional finish. Fill in the stars and details using the same off-white paint.
Step 6: Add Floral Details
Use a clean mini stencil brush to add a second coat of red to the rose and green to the leaves. For smaller areas, try a gentle pouncing motion instead of swirling for crisp edges. Once finished, lift the stencil and allow everything to dry completely.
Final Reveal
