DIY Strength & Dignity Cowboy Hat Tutorial | Metallic Stencil Makeover

Hey friends! Tammy from Cheers to Creativity is back with another creative project, and this one is perfect for anyone who loves meaningful dΓ©cor with a western flair. In this tutorial, Tammy transforms a simple cowboy-style hat into a gorgeous custom piece using the new Strength & Dignity stencil set from Essential Stencil.

With soft metallic finishes, elegant florals, and an inspiring quote, this DIY hat project is beginner-friendly and beautiful enough to wear or display. Even better β€” these stencil designs can also be used on trays, signs, canvas, and other dΓ©cor projects.

DIY Strength & Dignity Cowboy Hat

Materials Needed

Step 1: Stencil the Main Quote

Tape down the phrase β€œShe is clothed with strength and dignity” from the Strength & Dignity stencil set onto the top part of the hat brim.

Using a mini stencil brush, lightly apply a brownish-copper metallic paint. Tammy recommends offloading excess paint first so the stencil stays crisp and clean.

Allow the first coat to dry before applying a second coat for a richer finish.

Step 2: Add the Second Phrase

Next, position the phrase β€œand she laughs without fear of the future” along the lower brim of the hat.

Use the same metallic paint mixture and slowly build the color in light layers for the best coverage.

Step 3: Stencil the Floral Designs

Tape the floral stencil onto one side of the brim. Tammy mixed a touch of dark brown paint into the copper metallic paint to deepen the color and help the flowers stand out beautifully.

Stencil the floral design using light circular motions, then carefully lift the stencil.

Reposition the floral stencil on the opposite side and repeat the process.

Step 4: Highlight the Flowers

Using a separate stencil brush, lightly dry brush champagne gold metallic paint over the tips of the petals.

This subtle shimmer adds dimension without looking overly glittery.

Step 5: Add the Fireflies

For a whimsical finishing touch, Tammy used the firefly design from the Trust the Process stencil in the Keeper of Dreams set.

Stencil a few fireflies around the brim using the same brown metallic paint, then lightly add a touch of peacock teal to the wings for extra detail.
