Materials

Step 1: Paint the Base

Start with a white square canvas. Paint the main surface with Fusion Mineral Paint in Chestnut Mare, a rich caramel-toned shade.

Use French Eggshell, a soft pale blue-grey, around the edges and sides of the canvas.

Helpful Tip: When painting right up to an edge, start your brush slightly before the edge and brush toward it. Avoid letting the brush travel down the side. This helps prevent paint from creating drips along the edge.

Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the stenciling.

Step 2: Add the Checker Pattern

Grab the An Acorn in Your Pocket Stencil and position the checker pattern along one edge of the canvas.

Using a stencil brush and Chestnut Mare, lightly pounce the paint over the checker pattern. Repeat the pattern around all four edges.

Next, use the same stencil along the bottom section of the canvas. Fill the checker pattern with French Eggshell.

Carefully lift the stencil and repeat the pattern along the top and side sections to create a full checkerboard border.

Helpful Tips:

  • Less is more when stenciling. Offload excess paint from your stencil brush before applying it to the stencil.
  • Use a light pouncing motion rather than swirling the brush.
  • Carefully lift the stencil to help keep your checker lines crisp and clean.

Let the checkerboard border dry completely before adding the center design.

Step 3: Add the Pumpkin Patch Design

Position the Pumpkin Patch Stencil Set in the center of the canvas.

Fill the design with white paint, but leave the pumpkin area open. This empty space will become the perfect spot for the pumpkin transfer.

Teaching Moment: Keep your paint application light and use a pouncing motion. This helps create clean stencil edges without pushing paint underneath the design.

Step 4: Add the Pumpkin Transfer

Now for the finishing touch!

Open the Heirloom Harvest Market Transfer Set and choose a pumpkin that fits nicely in the open space on your canvas.

Sharon chose a pumpkin with beautiful blue-green tones. Those colors coordinate beautifully with the French Eggshell background.

Cut out the pumpkin design and position it in the center of the canvas. Use the Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool to carefully burnish the design onto the canvas.

Helpful Tip: Choose a transfer element that fits comfortably inside the open area of your stencil design. Sharon's blue-green pumpkin was the perfect choice because it ties the entire color palette together.
