This layered cross and star design combines classic Americana colors with texture and dimension. You can keep it clean and crisp or lean into a more rustic, hand-painted look—it’s completely up to your style.

Start by preparing your wooden cross and star sign. Make sure both pieces are clean, smooth, and completely dry before beginning.
Using a stain sponge, apply a navy blue stain to all sides of the wooden cross. Set aside and allow it to dry fully.
Take your wooden star sign and stain it with a brown shade, making sure to cover all sides. You can use a blow dryer to speed up drying time.
Once dry, lightly sand the star to create a smooth surface.
Using a chip brush, lightly dry brush white paint over the star. Let it dry, then sand again to achieve a soft, blended look.
This step adds dimension and keeps the background from looking flat.
Position the bonus stencil from the Star Pattern Set onto the cross. Using a stencil brush, apply white paint and repeat the pattern as desired.
Use light, circular motions and offload your brush to avoid bleed-through.
Secure the stripe stencil from the American Flag Welcome set onto the star using tape. Fill in with red paint, working in sections if needed.
Build your color in layers for a more solid, even finish.
Using a pointed spatula, apply random strokes of white, blue, red, and yellow paint across the star.

Apply adhesive to the back of the wooden cross, then attach it to the center of the star. Slightly offset it if you want a more dimensional look.
