Make a Charming Welcome Stool for Your Entryway
Hi friends! Sharon Hankins of I Restore Stuff here. Today I’m showing you how to transform a simple wooden stool into a warm welcome piece for your home entryway using a few of my favorite stencils from Essential Stencil.

Materials Needed
- Wooden stool
- Welcome to Our Strawberry Patch Stencil
- Simply Blessed Door Hanger Stencil
- Fusion Mineral Paint in “Storm” and “White Oak”
- Painter’s tape
- Essential Stencil stencil brushes
- Cardboard for offloading paint
- Sealer (e.g., matte Tough Coat)
Stenciling the Top: Welcome Sign
Start by giving your stool a solid coat of Fusion Mineral Paint in Storm and let it dry completely.
Next, grab the “Welcome” stencil from the Welcome to Our Patch set. Tape off the rest of the phrase so only “Welcome” shows, then center it on the top panel of your stool.
Using a 5/8" stencil brush and the color White Oak, apply the paint in a swirling motion. Keep your brush almost dry to avoid bleed-through. Two light coats work best for crisp, clean edges.
Stenciling the Sides: Subtle Patterns
For a beautiful accent, use one of the pattern stencils from the Simply Blessed Door Hanger pack. Tape the stencil along one side of the stool and use the same swirling brush technique with White Oak paint.
You only need to stencil one side on camera—repeat the process for the other side after drying.
Helpful Tips
- Offload paint onto cardboard to prevent bleed-through.
- Swirling works better than dabbing for crisp edges.
- Two thin coats are better than one thick coat.
- Seal your stool with a clear matte sealer for durability.
