🌙 Love You to the Moon & Back: A Sparkly Valentine Project
Hi friends! 💕 Amanda Dillon of Mettle Modern Design is sharing a sweet Valentine project that mixes stenciling, subtle paint layers, reflective glass, and resin for a truly special keepsake.
This project uses the brand new “I Love You to the Moon and Back” 8×10 stencil from Essential Stencil and shows how a simple design can become a dimensional, sparkly statement piece.

Materials Used
- I Love You to the Moon and Back 8×10 Stencil
- Stencil Brush Set | Pure Natural Bristle Brushes
- 9×12” wood board
- White stain
- Grey, black, and off-white acrylic paint
- Reflective platinum stained glass pieces
- Resin (2 oz)
- Sponge, sanding sponge, tape
- Silicone spatula & mixing stick
- Optional beach or summer figurine
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep the Board
Start by staining your 9×12" board using a sponge and white stain. Be sure to include the sides. Blow-dry to speed up drying.
Once dry, lightly sand the surface to smooth everything out.
2. Stencil the Moon
Position the stencil slightly off-center. Using a stencil brush, fill in only the moon with off-white paint. This subtle layer helps define the moon without overpowering it.
3. Add the Wording
Reposition the stencil on the opposite side, leaving space between the moon and text. Fill in “to the moon” using grey paint.
Using the same brush, apply black paint to the remaining words. Add a second coat if needed.
Fill in the stars with grey paint and allow everything to dry completely.
4. Add Glass & Resin
Place reflective platinum stained glass pieces inside the moon for a dimensional sparkle.
Mix your resin for about 3 minutes. Drizzle over the moon and board, then gently spread with a spatula to cover evenly.
5. Final Touches
Once the resin has cured, place a beach or summer figurine beside the moon for a relaxed coastal feel.

Helpful Tips from Amanda
- Dry time matters. If you’re not on a time crunch, let paint fully cure before adding resin.
- Size up if needed. A slightly larger board gives more room if you want extra embellishments.
- Neutral paint = flexibility. Soft greys and whites allow you to swap glass colors easily.
- Seal first if needed. Very porous wood may benefit from a quick seal before resin.
