๐Ÿ„โœจ DIY Farmhouse Cow Sign: Bold, Barn-Red & Beautiful!

If you love classic farmhouse decor with bold contrast, this cow sign project is a must-try. Using a rich barn-red base, a striking Holstein rub-on transfer, and layered stencil details, this piece comes together beautifully with just a few techniques. This project was demonstrated by Sharon of Sharon Shed Signs and Designs, who is known for her clean layouts and thoughtful details.

Prep the Board

Start with a rectangular pine board that is clean and completely dry. Apply painterโ€™s tape along all edges to create a defined border for your design.

Paint the Base & Frame

Using a sponge brush, apply a light coat of deep red paint over the entire board. Add a second coat if needed, and allow the paint to dry completely before moving on.

Dry paint is key when layering techniques. Rushing this step can cause tape bleed or transfer issues later.

Painting board red

Once dry, remove the tape. Re-tape just inside the red area to protect it, then paint the exposed edges black to create a crisp frame. Let dry fully before removing the tape.

Apply the Cow Rub-On Transfer

Select your favorite cow from the Large Highland and Holstein Cow Rub-On Transfer Set. Position it along the bottom of the board.

Burnish firmly using the Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool, then peel slowly.

If any area doesnโ€™t stick, simply lay it back down and burnish again. Fully cured paint makes all the difference here.

Stencil the Wording

Place the โ€œFarm Lifeโ€ stencil from the Farm Life Mini Sign Stencils pack at the top of the board.

Using a stencil brush, apply black paint with a light hand, building coverage gradually for clean edges.

Add Buffalo Check Details

To add visual interest, layer in subtle pattern details using the bonus stencil from the Buffalo Check Stencil pack.

First, align the stencil just below the wording and apply white paint.

Next, position the stencil just above the cow and apply black paint to only three rows. Repeat across the board for a continuous look.

Keeping the pattern minimal helps it support the design instead of overpowering it.
