🐄 Farm Charm Magic: Layered Cows, Florals & Texture That Wow

Hello, hello! 👋 Today we’re creating a beautifully layered farmhouse-style piece using both rub-on transfers and stencils—and the results are seriously stunning.

This project was taught by Renee of Flip Flop Furnishings, an Essential Stencil brand ambassador, and it’s a perfect example of how combining textures, transfers, and lettering can elevate a simple wood round into a polished, sell-worthy design.

Layered Cow & Floral Farm Charm Sign

    Materials Used:

Step 1: Prep the Wood Surface

Start with a 16” round wood board that’s been pre-painted in a warm brown tone. Since this piece is designed as a shelf sitter, a ¼” thickness works perfectly.

Lay a strip of painter’s tape down the center of the board to divide the surface.

Step 2: Add Subtle Texture with a Background Stencil

From the Background Textures Mini Stencil Pack, select the grid or burlap-style texture.

Using a stencil brush and white paint, work heavier on the edges and lighter toward the center. This soft variation helps the transfer stand out later.

Step 3: Apply the Cow Rub-on Transfer

Carefully remove the tape once the paint is dry. Position your cow from the Large Highland & Holstein Cow Transfer Set on the opposite side.

Burnish with firm, even pressure. Slowly lift the backing as you go. If something doesn’t stick, just lay it back down and keep rubbing.

Step 4: Layer on Summer Florals

Choose a floral design from the Rustic Summer Flowers Transfer Pack and place it above the cow’s head.

Overlapping florals add movement and make the design feel organic.

Step 5: Add the “Farm Charm” Stencil

Grab the “Farm Charm” stencil from the Grace, Gratitude & Grit Mini Sign Stencils.

Stencil vertically using a dark gray paint for high contrast and balance.

Step 6: Finish with Floral Balance

Add another floral transfer underneath the wording to visually anchor the design.

    Step 7: Distress & Seal

Once everything is fully set, lightly sand the surface to soften edges and create a lived-in farmhouse feel.

    Helpful Tips:
    • Wash your hands before transfers—lotions can prevent adhesion.
    • Use long, confident strokes when burnishing.
    • Seal with soft furniture wax for protection and color enhancement.

    Final Reveal

This layered cow sign is perfect as a shelf sitter, seasonal swap piece, or even a product to sell. Transfers are one-time use, making them ideal for batching and profit-friendly projects.
