Amanda Dillon of Mettle Modern Design joined us for a special Christmas project featuring the brand-new Build a Nativity stencil collection from Essential Stencil! Known for her modern coastal aesthetic and creative stain blending techniques, Amanda shows how to combine soft ombré color, layered stencils, and subtle tones to create a stunning nativity scene that’s perfect for the holidays—or year-round décor.
Start by staining an 8x10 wood panel board with white stain using a sponge. Make sure to include the edges—this will serve as your base layer.
While the white stain is still wet, blend in Vintage Blue across the top half.
Next, apply Weathered Oak to the bottom section. Blend softly where the colors meet, and spritz lightly with water for a seamless ombré look.
Position the Nativity House design from the Holy Night Nativity Stencil slightly off-center. Using black acrylic paint and your stencil brush, fill in the design and lift carefully.
Once dry, realign your stencil and mix white and black paint to create a soft gray for subtle shading.
Stencil Baby Jesus first at the base of the nativity using black paint, then layer with gray for soft dimension.
Add Mary to one side and Joseph to the other, layering the same way—black first, then gray for depth.
Position the star design above the nativity and stencil it in black for contrast.
Next, use the Bethlehem Scene with Palms stencil to add a palm tree beside the house. This simple detail ties the scene together beautifully.
Once everything is dry, lightly sand the surface for a smooth, professional finish.
Using a sponge, gently drag black paint across the surface to create a soft, aged look. Add a touch of black paint around the edges to frame your design and give it a rustic finish.
