🌸 Textured Easter Eggs with Saltwash: Create Beautiful Raised Floral Designs

Textured finishes are one of the easiest ways to make simple wood pieces look dimensional and vintage. In this tutorial, we’re sharing a creative technique demonstrated by Essential Stencil ambassador Cindy of Berry Jam Crafts, who shows how to use Saltwash to build layered texture and color on wooden egg cutouts.

This project uses soft spring colors and raised stencil details to create beautiful Easter dΓ©cor with a rustic, weathered look. If you’ve never tried Saltwash before, this is a great beginner-friendly project that delivers stunning results.

Materials Needed

Step 1: Paint the Base

Start by painting a 6" egg-shaped board with white paint, making sure to cover the front and sides. This bright base coat helps the layered colors stand out.

Allow the paint to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Step 2: Prepare the Paint Mixtures

Pour yellow, pink, and purple paint into separate small cups. Add Saltwash powder to each and mix thoroughly.

Aim for a thick consistency similar to brownie batter. This texture helps the paint hold peaks and creates that signature weathered look.

Step 3: Apply the First Layer

Using a brush, lightly dab the pink Saltwash mixture onto the 6" egg board.

This dabbing technique builds natural texture and dimension.

Allow the layer to dry fully before adding additional colors.

Step 4: Add the Second Layer

Next, dab the purple mixture across the surface to build additional texture and depth.

Layering colors gives the egg a weathered, dimensional finish.

Step 5: Create the Background

Lightly brush white paint across the egg to soften the colors and unify the layers.

Once dry, dab the yellow Saltwash mixture around the surface to add brightness and more texture.

Step 6: Paint the Small Egg

Take the 4" egg-shaped board and apply the yellow Saltwash mixture across the entire surface.

This piece will become the raised stencil accent layered over the larger egg.

Step 7: Stencil the Floral Design

Place a design from the Floral Egg Mini Tag Set onto the smaller egg.

Using a stencil brush, apply the pink Saltwash mixture through the stencil.

Apply it generously to create a raised, dimensional stencil design.

Step 8: Enhance the Texture

Once the stencil is completely dry, lightly dry brush white paint across the raised design.

This technique highlights the peaks and creates a beautifully aged effect.

Helpful Tips
  • Thicker paint mixtures create stronger texture.
  • Let each layer dry before adding the next for best results.
  • Dry brushing white paint highlights the raised texture beautifully.
  • You can sand or scrape areas lightly to reveal layers and add more depth.

Final Reveal

These textured eggs are perfect for Easter decorating, tiered trays, or seasonal shelf displays. The combination of layered Saltwash texture and raised stencil details makes each piece completely unique.
