Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Wood Surface

Start with a clean, dry, and dust-free 7" x 7" wood sign holder. This ensures smooth paint application and crisp stencil results.

Step 2: Base Coat the Board

Paint the entire board with white paint. Allow it to dry slightly, then apply a second coat if needed for full coverage.

Step 3: Add a Rustic Effect

While the white paint is still slightly damp, lightly brush brown paint vertically across the board. This creates a soft, rustic look without overpowering the base.

Step 4: Stencil the Sunflower

Position the With Brave Wings She Flies stencil onto the board and secure it. Using a mini stencil brush, randomly apply yellow, golden yellow, and red to the sunflower petals for a blended, dimensional look.

Step 5: Paint the Stem and Leaves

Using a separate brush, fill in the stem and leaves with green paint.

Step 6: Add the Quote

Stencil the lettering using Tuscan red paint. Apply a second coat if you prefer a richer, bolder finish.

Step 7: Paint the Dragonfly

Using another stencil brush, fill in the dragonfly with blue paint. Add a second coat if needed for full coverage.

Step 8: Add Sparkle to the Wings

Apply glitter paint to the dragonfly wings using a thin-tipped brush. Gently spread the glitter to create a light, shimmering effect.

Helpful Tips

  • Offload your paint. Too much paint causes bleeding. Light, dry layers give the cleanest results.
  • Work in layers. Building color slowly creates natural blending, especially for florals.
  • Separate brushes by color. This keeps tones clean and prevents muddy results.
  • Let layers dry slightly. This helps preserve crisp stencil edges.

This project is a beautiful example of how a few thoughtful paint layers and a well-designed stencil can turn a simple wood panel into meaningful decor.
