DIY Primitive House Sign Using Essential Stencils

Hi friends! Sharon from I Restore Stuff here. I'm back from a restful vacation and excited to jump into a charming farmhouse-inspired project using Essential Stencil’s brand new Primitive Collection. If you're a fan of rustic charm and cozy details, this one's for you!

In today’s tutorial, we’ll create a beautiful wooden slat sign featuring a primitive house, willow tree, sheep, a sweet farmhouse quote, and layered stencil accents.

Materials Needed

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Stencil the House

Choose your favorite house design and stencil the base in Paisley Blue using a regular stencil brush.

Once dry, align the roof and window stencil and stencil in Homestead Blue.

2. Add the Willow Tree

Stencil a willow tree beside the house using Casement White as a base coat.

3. Stencil the Sheep

Use white for their bodies and black for heads and legs.

4. Add the Crow

Stencil a crow on top of the tree using Coal Black.

5. Add the Words

Stencil the phrase β€œLove Grows Best in Little Houses.” First, stencil \"HOUSES\" in black. Then slightly shift the stencil and go over all text in white to create a charming shadow effect.

6. Add Accents

Stencil hearts in Cranberry Red onto the sheep and tree. Use Arcadia Pear for a soft green over the willow leaves, and add tree trunk detail in black for depth.

Helpful Tips

  • Offload your brush well before stenciling to avoid bleed-through.
  • Use a plastic bag or wrap to keep brushes from drying out mid-project.
  • Create shadow effects by offsetting your stencil slightly for the second color layer.
  • Use painter’s tape for crisp edges and extra stability if needed.
