Materials Needed

Prep Your Round

Use a tape measure to find the center of your 18" round and mark it with a pencil.

Apply painters tape down the middle to divide the board into two halves.

Create a Faux Stain Finish

Mix brown paint with a bit of water to create a wash. Brush it over one half of the board and let it dry completely.

Paint the Opposite Side

Paint the other half white. Apply two coats for opacity. Allow to dry and sand lightly.

Stencil the Checkered Pattern

Place the Checkered Stencil over the white side. Use a dry brush technique with black paint to create a faded, rustic effect. Let dry and lightly sand.

Stencil Home Sweet Home

Align the Home Sweet Home Stencil on the stained side. Tape it down securely and stencil the words in white, starting from the bottom and working up.

Fill In Stencil Bridges

Use a detail brush and lightly dab paint to fill in the stencil bridge gaps. Use very little paint to avoid buildup and keep your letters looking crisp.

Helpful Tips
  • Use minimal paint when filling bridgesβ€”dab, don’t drag!
  • If needed, sand lightly after filling bridges to blend.
  • Add a seasonal bow to the top to switch from everyday to holiday style!

Final Reveal

This sign is perfect for transitional decorβ€”simply swap out the bow for the season!
