DIY Patriotic Stenciled T-Shirt

Materials:

Step 1: Prep Your Shirt

Lay your t-shirt flat and insert a piece of cardboard (or any firm, flat surface) inside to prevent paint from bleeding through.

Step 2: Base Design with White

Center your 4th of July Collage stencil on the shirt and secure it with tape.

Using a stencil brush, apply white paint evenly over the design. Let it dry, then add a second coat for full coverage.

Use light layers and a dabbing motion to prevent paint bleed.

Step 3: Add Gold Details

With a clean brush, apply a second coat of gold paint to the Statue of Liberty and the star elements to make them stand out.

Step 4: Fill in Blue Details

Use a smaller brush, like those in the Mini Stencil Brush Set, to carefully fill in the remaining elements with blue paint.

Step 5: Add a Splatter Effect

Lightly splatter blue paint across the shirt using a brush for a fun, festive finish.

This step is optional, but it adds a unique, handmade touch.

Step 6: Final Reveal

Once everything is completely dry, carefully remove the stencil to reveal your finished design.

This is where all your layering and detail work really shines!

Helpful Tips:
  • Use light layers of paint to avoid bleeding under the stencil
  • Secure your stencil well before painting
  • Use smaller brushes for detailed areas
  • Always heat set your design to make it long-lasting and washable

Heat Set Your Design

To make your design permanent:

  • Place it in the dryer on low heat for about 20 minutes, or
  • Use a heat tool or iron with a protective layer

This helps lock in the paint so your shirt stays vibrant wash after wash.

This simple DIY is a great way to create custom apparel for holidays, events, or your handmade business.
