Farmhouse Round Sign with the There’s No Place Like Home Stencil

Created by Melissa Bradshaw of Junk and Craft Treasures, this project combines painted and stained finishes with elegant stencil details to create a welcoming farmhouse-style sign.

Materials Needed

Step 1: Paint the Bottom Section

Place painter’s tape across the center of a 16" round board to divide it into two sections. Using a flat brush, paint the bottom section with Duck Egg chalk paint, creating a soft muted blue-green background.

Allow the paint to dry completely before carefully removing the tape.

Step 2: Apply the Wood Stain

Once the painted section is dry, place a fresh strip of painter’s tape along the edge to protect the blue finish.

Apply Dark Walnut water-based stain to the top half of the sign. Wipe away any excess stain using a clean cloth until you achieve the desired look.

The contrast between the rich walnut stain and soft Duck Egg paint creates the perfect farmhouse color combination.

Step 3: Add the Lace Stencil Design

Position the decorative lace stencil from the There’s No Place Like Home stencil set over the painted lower section.

Using a stencil brush and white paint, apply light coats to build coverage while maintaining crisp stencil lines. Allow the first coat to dry before applying a second coat.

Using multiple light coats helps prevent paint bleed and creates cleaner stencil results.

Step 4: Stencil the Phrase

Place the "There’s No Place Like Home" phrase stencil onto the stained upper section.

Using the same white paint and stencil brush, fill in the lettering. Allow the paint to dry and add a second coat where needed for bold, bright coverage.

The bright white lettering stands out beautifully against the rich walnut background.

Helpful Tips

  • Use painter's tape to create crisp separation lines between paint and stain.
  • Apply stencil paint with a nearly dry brush using light, circular motions.
  • Build coverage with multiple thin coats rather than one heavy coat.
  • Allow each layer to dry before repositioning stencils.
  • White paint provides maximum contrast against both stained and painted surfaces.

This project proves that a few simple techniques can create a stunning custom décor piece. The layered finishes and elegant stencil details make this sign a beautiful addition to farmhouse, cottage, or everyday home décor.
