Materials

Create the Glowing Moon Background

Start with a 10-inch round board. Using a sponge, apply DecoArt Moon Yellow as a soft base coat.

While the yellow base is still damp, dab on Spiced Pumpkin and Burnt Orange. Blend the colors together as you work to create a warm, glowing moon effect with plenty of texture.

Next, apply black paint around the outer edges of the board. Lightly blend it inward to add depth and create a darker nighttime look while keeping the center of the moon bright.

Let the background dry completely before moving on to the stencil.

Stencil the Witch’s Garden

Once the background is dry, position The Witch’s Garden Stencil onto the board.

Using a Mini Stencil Brush, fill the garden elements with a deep black-green paint. This adds subtle color while keeping the overall design moody and silhouetted.

Next, use the same stencil brush to boldly fill in the witch, cat, small plant, and bats with black paint.

For a little nighttime sparkle, switch to another Mini Stencil Brush and fill the stars with silver paint.

Let the paint dry before carefully lifting the stencil. This helps keep the small details crisp and clean.

Add the Ground and Grass Details

After removing the stencil, lightly apply black paint beneath the design and toward the bottom of the board. This creates a simple ground effect and gives the witch and cat somewhere to stand.

For the final detail, grab a Detail Brush. Add thin, light streaks of black paint along the bottom edge to suggest wispy grass.

And that’s it! The warm moon colors, dark silhouettes, and tiny silver stars come together to create a wonderfully spooky Halloween scene.

Helpful Tips

  • Keep the center of the background light. The bright yellow center helps the witch silhouette stand out.
  • Blend while the paint is damp. This makes it easier to create a soft transition between the yellow, orange, and pumpkin shades.
  • Don’t overwork the background. A little variation and texture adds character to the moon.
  • Let the background dry before stenciling. A dry surface helps prevent colors from mixing where you don’t want them.
  • Use separate brushes for different colors when possible. It makes switching between the black, black-green, and silver details much easier.
  • Keep the grass strokes loose. Thin, imperfect lines create a more natural silhouette.
