Hey friends! Amanda here from Mettle Modern Design will be sharing one of her favorite ways to turn leftover materials into something meaningful and seasonal.
If youβve ever held onto old frame backer boards thinking βI might use this somedayββ¦ this is your sign. Todayβs project is all about creating interchangeable framed art that you can swap out with the seasons. Itβs simple, budget-friendly, and such a fun way to decorate your space.
Step 1: Prep Your Surface
Start by preparing your frame and backer board. Make sure the surface is clean and ready for paint.
Step 2: Apply Base Coat
Paint the entire backer board with white paint using a flat brush for even coverage.
Step 3: Create a Soft Blended Background
While the paint is still slightly damp, apply light blue paint to the top. Add more white toward the center, then lightly spritz with water and blend.
π‘ Tip: Blending while the paint is damp gives you that soft sky-to-ground ombrΓ© effect without harsh lines.
Step 4: Dry and Smooth
Let the paint fully dry, then lightly sand the surface for a smooth finish.
Step 5: Apply Your Transfer
Cut out your design from the transfer set and position it on your board. Use your transfer tool to burnish and adhere it.
π‘ Tip: Take your time burnishingβespecially over painted surfaces. If any section lifts, lay it back down and keep rubbing until fully adhered.
Step 6: Assemble Your Frame
Place your finished board back into the frame.
This project is such a fun way to reuse materials and create something custom for your home. You can easily swap designs throughout the yearβpatriotic, seasonal, everyday dΓ©corβyou name it.
