Melissa Miller of Millers Rustic Sawmill is back with another cozy, creative project! This time, she’s showing us how to make a reversible live edge wood sign — perfect for year-round display. One side is a charming kitchen accent, and the other is ready to celebrate fall in style.

    Materials

    Side One: The Gathering Place

    Clean wood slab

Start with a clean, dry live edge wood slab. Wipe away any dust so your paint adheres beautifully.

    The Gathering Place stencil

Secure The Gathering Place stencil with painter’s tape. Using a stencil brush, swirl on black cherry paint for a rich, deep reddish tone. Remove the stencil and let dry.

    Side Two: Tis’ the Season

    Tis the Season stencil

Flip the slab over and tape down the Tis’ the Season stencil. Fill the leaf with black cherry paint.

    Football stencil

Paint the football shape dark brown, letting a hint of black cherry blend in for depth.

    Pumpkin base

Mix dark brown and black cherry paint to create a warm base for the pumpkin.

    Cup stencil

Fill in the cup shape with black cherry paint.

    Copper leaf highlight

Add a shimmering copper coat to the leaf for a festive touch.

    Pumpkin layers

Layer on rust and then orange paint for a pumpkin with vibrant depth.

    Splatter effect

Splatter off-white paint over the football for added texture.

    Lettering base coat

Mix copper and black cherry to base coat the lettering.

    Teal lettering

Once dry, layer teal over the letters for bold contrast.

    Detail brush accents

With a detail brush, add teal accents to the pumpkin, football, and leaf to tie the design together.

    Final reversible sign

The result? A two-sided sign you can flip with the seasons!

    Helpful Tips

    • Use a dry brush technique for crisp stencil lines.
    • Blend colors directly on your brush for a more natural, layered effect.
    • Don’t overthink — unexpected color choices can turn out beautifully.
    • Keep both sides coordinated with a common accent color like teal or gold.
