Football season is the perfect excuse to give an old sign a fresh new look. In this project, Melissa of Millers Rustic Sawmill transforms the reverse side of a rustic barnwood sign into a fun football-inspired piece using bold colors and Essential Stencil designs.
The combination of a soft whitewashed background, bright green play patterns, red helmets, and dark brown footballs gives this sign plenty of game-day personality. It’s a simple way to repurpose a wood sign you already have and make it ready for football season.
Start with a rustic wood board or an existing sign that could use a seasonal refresh. Melissa uses the reverse side of an existing barnwood sign, making this a great example of how you can give an old piece a completely new purpose.
Begin by applying white paint to the board with a wet wipe. This creates a soft, subtle whitewash instead of a solid coat of paint.
Let the board dry completely before moving on to the stencil work.
Once the whitewashed background is dry, position the Football Play Pattern Stencil on the board. Leave a little space at the very top for the football saying.
Tape the stencil securely in place. Using a Mini Stencil Brush, fill the arrows, Xs, and Os with bright green paint.
Keeping the colors separated makes the football graphics stand out against the soft wood background.
Switch to another mini stencil brush and fill the helmet designs with bright red paint.
Allow the first coat to dry before adding a second coat.
A second coat helps create fuller, more even coverage, especially when working with a bright color over a lighter background.
Using a different stencil brush, fill the football designs with dark brown paint.
The brown adds a classic football detail while helping balance the bright green and red used throughout the pattern.
Once the football play pattern is completely dry, grab the Football Season stencil from the Fall Football Sayings Set.
Position the stencil at the top of the board and fill in just the words using the same dark brown paint.
Leaving the football pattern visible underneath keeps the finished sign layered and playful without making the design feel too busy.
The finished sign combines rustic texture with bold football graphics for an easy seasonal update. And because this project uses the reverse side of an existing sign, you get even more use out of a piece you already have.
