There's something special about creating handmade fall dΓ©cor that feels warm, welcoming, and timeless. In this project, Sharon Hankins of I Restore Stuff, one of our Essential Stencil Live Ambassadors, shows how easy it is to combine stenciling and rub-on transfers to create a beautiful farmhouse-style fall sign. Even better, she shares a simple shadow technique that gives your lettering extra dimension with very little effort.
Start with a round board that has already been painted white. A single coat creates a lightly distressed, whitewashed appearance that's perfect for farmhouse dΓ©cor. Make sure the paint is completely dry before you begin.
Position the Harvest Blessings stencil near the bottom of the board. Load your stencil brush with Chestnut Mare Fusion Mineral Paint, then offload most of the paint onto a paper towel or cardboard before stenciling. Apply the paint using light swirling motions and build the color gradually to help prevent paint bleed.
Cut out the vintage truck from the Cozy Fall Farmhouse transfer set. Position it near the top of the board and use the transfer tool to burnish the entire design until it releases from the backing paper. Peel slowly, and if any section remains attached to the sheet, simply lay it back down and rub again.
Once the orange lettering has dried, reposition the stencil exactly where it was before, then shift it slightly upward and to one side. Using black paint, stencil only the word "Harvest." This small offset creates an easy shadow effect that instantly adds depth and makes the design stand out.
This is an easy technique that can be used on many stencil projects whenever you want a dimensional look.
The combination of warm autumn colors, vintage farmhouse style, and layered lettering creates a welcoming seasonal sign that's perfect for hanging on a door, displaying on a shelf, or adding to your fall decorating.
