Ready to give a simple wooden broom a spooky makeover? Melissa from Junk and Craft Treasures is showing us how to create a fun double-sided Halloween broom using a mix of Essential Stencils.
One side features a rustic Broom Parking design with witches, bats, and a potion bottle. Flip it over, and you get an entirely different look with a whimsical black-and-white Spellbound Witch pattern.
The best part? You can mix and match elements from different stencils to create a design that feels completely your own.
Project Time: Allow drying time between paint and stain layers.
Difficulty: Beginner-friendly
Start with a clean, dry 17-inch wooden broom cutout. Make sure the surface is completely free of dust before painting.
Using a chip brush, paint the front, edges, and sides of the broom with orange paint. Allow it to dry completely.
Once the orange paint is dry, apply brown stain over the surface. Use a shop towel to wipe away the excess. Leave enough stain behind to tone down the orange while allowing some of the color and wood grain to show through.
Position the Broom Parking Stencil Set toward the bottom of the broom.
For a customized look, Melissa tapes off the three broom images and uses only the wording. Load your stencil brush with black paint, then offload most of the paint before touching the stencil.
Use a light swirling motion and gradually build up the coverage. Carefully lift the stencil when finished.
Next, grab the Not All Witches Live in Salem Stencil. Position the witch and two bats along the bottom portion of the broom. Stencil them with black paint and carefully lift the stencil.
From the Stay for a Spell Stencil, use the small potion bottle on the opposite side of the broom. Fill it in with black paint.
Use the same stencil to add a few bats randomly across the broom. Random placement makes the design feel playful and keeps the pattern from looking too uniform.
Once the first side is completely dry, carefully flip the broom over. Now it’s time for a completely different Halloween look.
Apply black paint over the back of the broom. Let the first coat dry completely, then add a second coat if needed for full coverage.
Once the black background is completely dry, grab the smaller pattern from the Spellbound Witch Pattern Stencil.
Using white paint and a lightly loaded stencil brush, position the pattern and fill it in. Carefully lift the stencil, move it to the next section, and repeat.
Continue working your way up the broom and toward the handle. Line up different elements as you go, and vary the coverage slightly for a fun, whimsical finish.
Don’t worry about making every section perfectly identical. The variation adds character to the finished design.
And there you have it—a spooky double-sided Halloween broom with two completely different looks!
