Shimmering Mermaid Tail Wall Art That Brings the Ocean to Life ๐Ÿงœโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŽจ

Hey friends! Sharon from I Restore Stuff is back with a magical coastal-inspired project that brings all the shimmer and ocean vibes to life. In this tutorial, she transforms a simple round board into a stunning mermaid tail design using layered blues, color-shifting paints, and a bold beachy phrase.

If youโ€™ve been wanting to experiment with shimmer paints or create something eye-catching for your space, this one is such a fun place to start.

Sparkly Mermaid Tail Round Sign

Materials:

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Create a soft ocean background
Start with a white round board and lightly blend in a pastel blue shade. Spritz water over the surface and drag your brush to soften the paint. This creates a dreamy, watercolor-like ocean effect.

2. Base the mermaid tail
Once dry, tape down your mermaid tail stencil. Fill the top portion with a bright blue using a stencil brush.

3. Blend in depth
Fill the bottom portion of the tail with a deep midnight blue. Blend where the two colors meet for a smooth transition and added dimension.

4. Layer shimmer scales
Keep the stencil in place and begin layering your shimmer paints using the scale stencil. Start at the top with blue shimmer.

Move into green shimmer for the middle section.

Then reposition and continue with red shimmer toward the lower section.

Finish the remaining section with purple shimmer and allow everything to dry before removing the stencil.

5. Add your phrase
Position the โ€œJust Another Day in Paradiseโ€ stencil in the center. Start with a white base layer.

6. Create a shadow effect
Once dry, slightly shift the stencil and apply a dark blue over the top to create a bold shadow effect that stands out on both light and dark areas.

Helpful Tips

  • Lightly de-stick your tape before applying to avoid pulling up base paint.
  • Donโ€™t stress about full coverage on the base layerโ€”the shimmer scales will add depth.
  • Use different brushes for each color to keep blends clean and vibrant.
  • Shimmer paints pop best over darker colors, so layer strategically for maximum effect.
  • The shadow technique is perfect for designs that cross both light and dark backgrounds.

This project is such a fun way to experiment with layered color, shimmer finishes, and stencil techniques. The final result catches the light beautifully and adds a playful coastal touch to any space.
