There’s something extra special about a project that works beyond one season. This sweet lovebirds round is the perfect example. While it’s inspired by Valentine’s Day, it’s truly a year-round piece filled with meaning, softness, and timeless charm.
Created by Renee of Flip Flop Furnishings – Custom Sign & Home Decor Artistry, this layered stencil project combines beautiful scripture, gentle color blending, and easy alignment for a finish that looks detailed but feels totally doable.

Start with a 12” round board pre-stained in a warm elmwood tone. This soft, blended stain creates depth and keeps the center lighter for contrast.

Position the Love Is Patient Script stencil over the board and tape securely. Using a regular stencil brush, apply white paint with a light hand.
Tip: Always offload your brush well. A dry brush and light pressure help prevent bleed-through.
Helpful Tip: Don’t worry if the entire stencil doesn’t fit on the surface. Partial text creates a beautiful, layered background and still carries the meaning.

Align the first layer of the Love Birds stencil. Use the built-in registration marks to make placement easy.
Stencil the branches in white, allowing some of the script to peek through.

Mix white and bluish-grey paint to create a soft, airy tone for the birds. Fill in both birds, then add black paint for their tiny feet.

Using a mini brush, stencil the hearts with a soft pink. Carefully lift the stencil and allow it to dry fully before moving on.

Align the second layer. Add black paint for the eyes and a soft pink blush on one bird for extra personality.

Stencil the wings using a slightly darker bluish-grey to add contrast and dimension.

Fill the flowers with pink using a mini brush.

Mix green and white paint for a lighter shade. Fill in the leaves, then lift the stencil and let everything dry again.

Align the third layer. Add white centers to the flowers and leaves. Use black paint for the birds’ beaks.

Reposition the first stencil layer and lightly stencil black paint along the bottom of the birds to create a subtle shadow effect.

The finished piece is soft, romantic, and meaningful — perfect for a bedroom, gallery wall, or even a year-round door hanger.
Finishing Tip: Apply a clear wax to protect the surface and make dusting easy. Wax also deepens the colors and gives a beautiful, soft sheen.
