Gingerbread Home Sweet Home Sign

Start with a 12-inch round wood board that has been pre-stained in a warm brown shade. Sharon used Fusion's Woodwick stain wash, allowing some of the natural wood grain to remain visible.

Materials

Step 1: Stencil the Home Sweet Home Words

Make sure your stained wood surface is completely clean and dry before beginning.

Position the Gingerbread Home Sweet Home Stencil toward the bottom half of the board, leaving enough space above it for the gingerbread house.

Using a 3/4-inch stencil brush and Victorian Lace paint, fill in the words with white.

Remember to offload your brush first. A small amount of paint on your brush helps prevent paint from bleeding underneath the stencil.

Carefully lift the stencil and allow the paint to dry completely. This white layer will become part of the shadow effect on the word Home.

Step 2: Add the Gingerbread House

Next, cut out the gingerbread house from the Merry & Sweet Christmas Rub-On Transfer Set.

Position it just above the Home Sweet Home wording. Use your hand and the Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool to burnish the design firmly until it is completely adhered.

Step 3: Create a Shadow on the Word Home

Place the Home Sweet Home stencil back over the lettering. This time, shift it slightly to the left and upward.

Tape off the words Sweet Home so they remain white. Using Cranberry paint, stencil only the word Home.

Apply a light coat first, followed by a second coat for solid coverage.

Less paint is better when stenciling. Several light coats give you cleaner edges and help prevent fuzzy or bleeding details.

Once the stencil is removed, the white lettering peeking out from underneath the red creates a simple dimensional shadow.

Step 4: Add the Lollipops

Now it's time for some colorful candy details!

Using the first layer of the lollipop stencil from the Gingerbread Home Sweet Home Stencil, position one lollipop on each side of the gingerbread house.

Fill each lollipop with Cranberry paint.

Step 5: Add the White Lollipop Swirls

Grab the second-layer swirl stencil and carefully position it over the first lollipop.

Fill the swirls with white paint, then repeat the process on the second lollipop.

Step 6: Add Snowy Details

While you have the stencil ready, use the snowflake details to add a little winter magic across the top portion of the board.

Use white paint and vary the placement of the snowflakes for a natural, snowy look.

Don't be afraid to mix and match stencil elements. Small details like these can completely change the look of a project.

Step 7: Add Gingerbread and Peppermint Transfers

For the bottom of the sign, cut out the little gingerbread cookie and two peppermint candy designs from the Merry & Sweet Christmas Rub-On Transfer Set.

Position the gingerbread cookie in the center underneath the Home Sweet Home wording. Add one peppermint candy on each side.

Burnish each transfer firmly with the Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool until the designs are fully transferred.

Step 8: Finish the Lollipop Sticks with a Shadow

Return to the lollipop stencil and line it up with the existing designs. Shift it slightly to create another subtle shadow effect.

Using white paint, fill in only the lollipop sticks. Repeat on the other side.

The small amount of red peeking around the white sticks creates a subtle dimensional effect that ties the layered design together.

Helpful Tips

  • Offload your stencil brush. Too much paint can cause it to seep underneath the stencil.
  • Build coverage with light coats. Two or more thin coats will usually give you cleaner results than one heavy coat.
  • Let paint dry between layers. This is especially important when creating offset shadow effects.
  • Use a firm hand when applying transfers. Burnish the entire design thoroughly before checking for full adhesion.
  • Shift your stencil slightly for easy shadows. A small offset can create a dimensional look without adding complicated techniques.
  • Mix stencil and transfer elements. Combining the two gives you more freedom to customize your finished piece.
