Materials You'll Need

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prep Your Frame

Start by applying painter’s tape along all the inner edges of your 18" framed wooden board. This helps keep your paint lines clean.

Step 2: Paint the Frame

Using a flat brush, paint the outer frame red β€” include both the inner and outer edges. Let it dry completely.

Step 3: Create the Background

Once dry, remove the tape. Apply white paint to the inner part of the board to create the background. Let it dry, then apply a second coat for a bolder, even finish.

Step 4: Smooth the Surface

When the white background is fully dry, lightly sand the surface for a smooth, professional finish.

Step 5: Add the Stencil Design

Position the Gingerbread Bakeshop 16x10 Stencil (exclusive to the Merry & Sweet Stencil Bundle 2025) on the board. Using a dry stencil brush, fill in all black design areas β€” except the word β€œGingerbread” and the two gingerbread cookies.

Step 6: Paint the Details

With a clean brush, paint the word β€œGingerbread” in red. Apply a second coat if needed for a more vibrant color.

Step 7: Add the Gingerbread Cookies

Using brown paint, fill in the gingerbread cookies. Allow the first coat to dry before applying a second layer for added depth. Then, carefully lift the stencil.

Step 8: Add Facial Details

Once the cookies are dry, align the face layer stencil over each gingerbread and fill in the adorable facial features using white paint.

Helpful Tips

  • Offload your brush! Before stenciling, dab excess paint onto a paper towel to prevent bleeding.
  • Keep your strokes light and use a dry brush technique for crisp edges.
  • Let each color dry completely before layering the next one.
  • For a farmhouse finish, lightly sand the entire piece once dry.
