Materials You’ll Need

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep the Board

Apply a coat of water-based antiquing glaze to your 16x8 board for a warm, rustic background. Don’t forget the sides! Let it dry completely.

2. Stencil the Snowman Base

Position Layer 1 of your Premium Snowman stencil and tape it down. Using a stencil brush, fill in the snowman shape with white paint. Apply a second coat for a crisp base.

3. Add the Arms

Position the snowman’s arm stencil from Layer 2. Lightly fill the space with white paint first — this helps the black paint stand out later. Once dry, apply black paint for a bold finish.

4. Paint the Mittens and Heart

Using a mini brush, lightly stencil the mittens white first, then go over them with mustard or golden paint for a cozy look. Add the heart stencil between the mittens and fill it in with red paint for a sweet touch.

5. Create the Scarf

Choose a scarf stencil design from Layer 3. Start with a white base coat, then stencil over it with mustard paint. For extra fullness, fill in the bridge areas with mustard too. Reposition the stencil and fill the circle details with blue paint for a cheerful accent.

6. Add the Hat and Face

Position the hat stencil above the snowman’s head and fill it first with white, then black paint. Next, use the face layer to stencil black eyes and a dotted smile. Finally, use a mini brush to paint the carrot nose orange.

7. Add Snowflakes and Finishing Touches

Use the first stencil layer again to add snowflakes around your board. Fill them in with white paint for a soft winter look. Then, use a small stencil or freehand a mustard star on the hat for a festive pop!

8. Embellish and Display

Attach ribbons or small bows to the top corner of your sign using a hot glue gun for an extra festive touch. Add wire or twine for easy hanging.

Helpful Tips

  • Work in layers: Let each section dry fully before moving to the next stencil layer to prevent smudging.
  • Use white undercoats for lighter colors on dark backgrounds — it helps colors pop beautifully.
  • Offload your brush before stenciling to avoid paint bleed under the stencil.
  • Don’t stress imperfections — Melissa reminds us that no one sees the “flaws” but us!
