Hi friends! Today we’re sharing a sweet and simple upcycling project that turns a plain thrifted wooden box into a charming tea caddy. This project was created by Sharon Hankins of I Restore Stuff, who is known for her warm, approachable style and her talent for giving overlooked pieces new life.
This is the kind of project that works beautifully for gifts, kitchen décor, or a cozy coffee and tea station. It’s beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and full of creative possibilities.

Start with a wooden storage box and lid. Make sure the surface is clean and completely dry. If needed, lightly sand the box to create a smooth surface for painting.

Mix Fusion Mineral Paint in Wood Wick with water to create a stain wash. A lighter wash allows the natural wood grain to show through while adding warmth. Apply the mixture to all sides of the box and lid, then allow it to dry completely.
Always test your wash on the bottom of the box first to make sure you like the color strength.

Take the “You Are My Cup of Tea” stencil from the My Cup of Tea Mini Sign Stencil Pack and position it on one side of the box.
Using a dry stencil brush and Casement White paint, fill in the cups and the words “cup of tea” using a gentle pouncing motion. Allow the paint to dry before carefully lifting the stencil.

Reposition the stencil to move the words “You are my” closer to the cups. Fill in the wording using the same white paint. Apply a second coat if needed for full coverage, then carefully remove the stencil.

Align the stencil with the cups again. Use painters tape to cover the first and third cups. Fill the center cup with a bright orange paint to create a fun focal point. Allow it to dry before lifting the stencil.

Slightly offset the stencil to create a layered look. Using a mini stencil brush, fill the heart on the first cup and the dots on the third cup with bright pink paint.

Once everything is dry, seal your piece to protect the finish and deepen the colors. This tea caddy is perfect for tea bags, coffee sachets, or even craft supplies.
This project also makes a thoughtful handmade gift for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or any tea lover in your life.
