✨ Hat Stencils, But Make It Fashion ✨ DIY Sweatshirt Neckline & Sleeve Stenciling

Hi friends! Melissa Miller of Miller’s Rustic Sawmill is back with a fun and creative way to use your hat stencils in an unexpected place — on clothing. In this tutorial, she shows how to stencil a cozy sweatshirt with a sweet neckline phrase and playful music notes on the sleeve. It’s an easy project with big personality, and perfect for gifts or everyday wear.

Stenciled Sweatshirt with Neckline Words & Sleeve Detail

    Materials Needed:

    Step 1: Prep the Sweatshirt

Grab your sweatshirt and slide a piece of cardstock or a thin board inside. This helps give you a firm surface to stencil on and prevents paint from bleeding through to the back.

Step 2: Stencil the Neckline Words

Position the “All You Need Is Love” word stencil from the Sunflower Hat Stencil Set along the front neckline. Take your time lining it up, then secure it with tape so it stays put.

Step 3: Paint Using a Pounce Technique

Using a mini stencil brush, lightly pounce the paint over the stencil. Be sure to offload excess paint before applying — this is key to preventing bleed, especially on knit fabrics. Let the paint dry completely, then gently peel away the stencil.

    Helpful Tips:
    • Pouncing works better than swirling on fabric.
    • Stretch the sweatshirt slightly while stenciling for cleaner lines.
    • Acrylic paint works great — no special fabric paint required.

Step 4: Add Music Notes to the Sleeve

Take the music notes stencil from the Country Love Hat Stencil Set and place it near the sleeve cuff. Fill it in using the same paint and brush. Reposition the stencil and repeat until you’ve created a fun wrap-around detail.

Don’t overthink placement. Sleeves don’t need to be perfect — the charm is in the handmade look.

Step 5: Heat Set & Wear

Once everything is dry, heat set your design using a heat tool or toss the sweatshirt in the dryer on low heat for 15–20 minutes. After that, it’s ready to wear.

This project is a perfect example of how hat stencils aren’t just for hats. Sweatshirts, sleeves, and neckline details open up a whole new world of creative possibilities.
