🌸 Rustic Elegance Meets Farmhouse Style: Cow Oval Wall Art

If you love layered backgrounds, soft vintage finishes, and statement farmhouse pieces, this project is for you.

In this tutorial, Essential Stencil ambassador Melissa Bradshaw of Junk and Craft Treasures walks us through creating a beautifully blended cow oval sign using rub-on transfers and subtle stencil layering. Melissa is known for her rustic-meets-elegant style and her ability to combine texture with softness — and this project is a perfect example.

This piece combines muted blue chalk paint, a delicate damask stencil background, a statement cow transfer, and a soft floral accent to create a dimensional farmhouse design.

Cow Oval Wall Art with Layered Stencil Background

    Step 1: Paint the Base

Start with an 18" oval wood board. Paint the entire surface with a muted duck egg blue shade using thin, even coats.

Allow it to dry completely before applying a second coat for fuller coverage.

Tip: Apply light coats rather than thick paint to prevent buildup and ensure a smooth finish.

Once dry, lightly sand the entire board to smooth the surface and create a soft, vintage feel. Wipe away sanding dust with a clean towel.

Step 2: Add the Damask Background

Position the Damask Pattern stencil over the board.

Using a stencil brush, lightly apply white paint in a swirling motion to create a soft background layer.

Less paint is key. Offload excess paint from your brush before stenciling to prevent bleeding. You can always build color gradually.

Repeat the stencil pattern until the board is covered. Allow to dry completely.

Lightly sand again to soften and blend the stencil into the background. This step creates depth and a dimensional, aged appearance.

Step 3: Apply the Cow Transfer

Select your cow from the Large Highland and Holstein Cow Rub-On Transfer Set.

Position it slightly lower on the board to allow space for embellishments above if desired.

Burnish using the Essential Transfer Tool, working in small circular sections.

You’ll hear a soft popping sound as the transfer releases. Check edges carefully before removing the carrier sheet.

Step 4: Add the Floral Accent

Cut out a rose from the Pink Roses Rub-On Transfer Set.

Position it near the cow’s ear to create a floral headdress effect.

Transfers can be layered, so it’s perfectly fine to apply this over the cow design.

Tip: Because the background is already detailed, choosing a softer floral keeps the overall design balanced and not overly busy.

Step 5: Finish with a Rustic Border

Lightly dry brush white paint along the edges of the board.

Offload most of the paint before brushing to create a soft, rustic frame effect.

This subtle border pulls the entire design together and adds a finished look.

    Final Reveal

This finished cow oval sign blends farmhouse charm with soft elegance.

It can be displayed with a sawtooth hanger, wire hanger, or even converted into a double-sided interchangeable sign.
