This layered Irish pub sign is full of rich texture, meaningful detail, and classic pub style. Using a blend of stained wood, metallic stenciling, and rub-on transfers, this project shows how easy it is to build depth and character with Essential Stencil products.
This project was created by Renee of Flip Flop Furnishings, known for her dimensional finishes and thoughtful layering techniques.
Start with a smooth, clean wood surface. Always wipe down your board with a damp cloth before painting to remove dust. Avoid wipes with oils, as they can interfere with paint and transfers.

Use watered-down green paint like a stain. Keep the color darker toward the top and gradually blend it lighter as you move downward.

Tape off the green section. Stain the bottom half with brown paint, keeping it darkest at the very bottom and lighter toward the center.

Once dry, remove the tape and lightly sand the entire surface for a smooth finish.
Helpful Tip: If your stain looks too dark, add water and blend with a clean area of your cloth. This keeps the gradient soft and natural.

Select the pattern from the stencil pack and position it on the lower half of the board. Secure it well with tape.
Using a dry stencil brush and metallic gold paint, apply light pressure. Metallics are highly pigmented, so less paint gives the cleanest result.

Center the A Hundred Thousand Welcomes stencil on the top portion of the board.
Apply black or charcoal paint in light layers. Start with a soft coat to seal the stencil edges, then add a second coat for a bold finish.

Cut out the vintage truck transfer and hover it over the surface to check placement before committing. Once placed, burnish firmly using the transfer tool.

Add a gold clover detail to the truck door for extra charm.

Layer additional clover designs above the lettering to create a bow-like effect without ribbon.
Helpful Tip: Add a soft shadow or grounding line under the truck tires so the design feels anchored instead of floating.

Once fully dry, seal the sign to protect the finish. This design works beautifully for Irish pubs, front doors, or seasonal dΓ©cor β and it can easily be scaled to a 16-inch round as well.
