🎃 Pretty in Pink: A Soft & Spooky Halloween DIY Sign
Hey friends! Amanda here from Mettle Modern Design, sharing a fun and slightly spooky Halloween DIY that blends unexpected colors with classic creepy elements. In this tutorial for Essential Stencil, we’re creating a pink ombré Halloween sign that mixes softness with spook—using rub-on transfers, stencils, and stain blending techniques anyone can master.

Pink Ombré Halloween Sign
Materials Used:
- 8" wooden board
- White, barn red, and black water-based stains
- Sponges and stencil brush
- Cute and Creepy Halloween Rub-on Transfer Set
- Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool
- Spray bottle (water)
- Sandpaper
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Use a sponge to stain the entire 8" board with white paint. Let it dry slightly but not completely.
- While the white is still tacky, dab barn red stain over it and blend using a sponge. Spritz lightly with water to help create a smooth gradient.
- Apply another layer of white at the top and more barn red at the bottom to deepen the ombré effect. Blend in small circular motions.
- Let it fully dry and lightly sand the surface to ensure it’s smooth and ready for decorating.
- Stencil a black spider web in one top corner using a sponge and stencil brush.
- Cut and place a spider and ghost from the Halloween Rub-on Transfer Set. Use the transfer tool to burnish them on.
- Add a small bat stencil for one last spooky detail.
- Finish by lightly applying a black stain wash around the edges and across the surface to give a mysterious, moody look.
- Sand again lightly if needed. Seal with a polyacrylic spray or brush-on if desired.
Helpful Tips:
- Blend while wet: Work quickly while the stain is damp for the smoothest gradient.
- Use light misting with a spray bottle to keep the blend soft and avoid hard lines.
- Don’t overdo black: A little black stain goes a long way in giving that spooky, misty finish.
