Give your Halloween decorating a little ghostly charm with this easy Ghostly Garden wood sign! Cindy Berry created this spooky-but-whimsical project using warm fall colors, a beautiful transfer, and a simple weathered finish.
The combination of Burnt Orange, Black, and Hazymoon creates the perfect backdrop for the ghostly design. And the best part? You don't need to be an expert with transfers to make it happen.
Start with an oval wood board and boldly paint the entire surface with Burnt Orange Paint. This warm shade gives the project a beautiful fall-inspired foundation.
While the base is still slightly damp, grab a chip brush and lightly work Black around the edges. Soften the color as you go rather than creating a solid black border.
Next, lightly brush Hazymoon, a soft off-white shade, through the background. You only need a few touches of light. The goal is a softly blended, dimensional background rather than full coverage.
Helpful blending tip: Keep your paint slightly damp while blending. It makes it much easier to soften the colors and create a seamless background.
Once you're happy with the background, allow it to dry completely. A blow dryer can help speed things along, but make sure the surface is completely dry before applying the transfer.
Once dry, lightly sand the board to create a smooth, softly blended look. Keep your touch gentle. You're refining the surface rather than removing the paint.
Now it's time for the star of the project! Grab the Midnight Garden Transfer Set and cut out the Ghost design.
Position the design on the board before burnishing. Take a moment to make sure you like the placement and that everything is sitting exactly where you want it.
Carefully burnish the design using the Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool. Work slowly over the entire transfer, paying extra attention to the smaller individual pieces.
If you're new to rub-on transfers, don't be intimidated. Slow and steady is the key. If an area doesn't want to release, don't force it. Lay the transfer back down and burnish that area again from a different direction.
Transfer tip: Your painted surface needs to be completely dry before applying a transfer. This is especially important when you've used layered paint or metallic finishes.
Once the Ghostly Garden transfer has fully adhered, it's time to give it that softly aged, weathered appearance.
Using 220-grit sandpaper, lightly sand over the design. Keep the pressure very gentle. You're simply softening the transfer and blending it visually into the painted background.
This small finishing step makes such a difference. The ghost looks less like it was simply placed on the board and more like it belongs right in the painted background.
And there you have itβa charming Ghostly Garden sign that's perfectly suited for Halloween and fall decorating!
Cindy Berry created this project as a guest host for Essential Stencil, bringing her love of all things ghostly to this fun fall design. The bold orange background, softly blended edges, and weathered Ghostly Garden transfer make this a simple project with plenty of Halloween personality.
