Thereβs something so fun about mixing rustic farmhouse style with patriotic decor β and this hand-painted sunflower porch board does exactly that! Cindy from FairyJam Crafts filled in for Tammy and created a creative red, white, and blue sunflower using Essential Stencil products, layered wording, and festive fireworks details.
The best part? You absolutely do not need to be an artist to make this project. If you can paint simple curved shapes, you can create this beautiful patriotic porch leaner for summer celebrations, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, or year-round Americana decor.
Start with a 1 ft. Γ 3.2 ft. vertical porch board. Cindy first stained the board using a barnwood stain and then lightly dry brushed white paint across the surface to create a rustic farmhouse finish.
Allow the surface to dry completely before beginning your design.

Using navy blue paint, trace a circular or half-circle shape near the top of the board to form the sunflower center. Cindy used a simple traced can lid to create the shape.
Once dry, begin painting loose sunflower petals around the center using Tuscan Red paint.
Remember: the rustic look works best when the petals are imperfect and hand-painted freely.

After outlining your petals, add straight dividing lines inside each section. Use red paint to fill selected areas and create a striped red-and-white patriotic sunflower effect.
The combination of rough brushstrokes and uneven striping gives the porch leaner its charming handmade appearance.

Once the sunflower is fully dry, place the larger star stencil over the navy center and stencil white stars using a stencil brush.
Helpful stencil tip: when applying white paint over darker colors, use a very light first coat to prevent paint bleed and discoloration.

Using the May 2026 Stencil of the Month add-on set, stencil βGod Bless Americaβ vertically down the board using metallic gold paint.
For brighter metallic coverage, Cindy recommends adding a darker base coat underneath before applying gold paint.

Next, randomly layer patriotic words and accents like βLiberty,β βFreedom,β β250th Anniversary,β stars, and eagle elements across the sunflower petals using white paint.
Keeping the wording slightly off-center adds personality and movement to the design.

To complete the project, use the Uncle Samβs Firework Co stencil to add colorful fireworks near the bottom of the porch board.
Use red, blue, and gold paint with mini stencil brushes for layered detail and texture.
The fireworks create the perfect finishing touch while balancing the sunflower design beautifully.

This patriotic sunflower porch leaner combines hand-painted charm with layered stencil details for a rustic Americana look that stands out beautifully on any porch.
