How to Make a Blended Coastal Fall Sign with Stencils & Stains

Hey friends! It’s Amanda from Mettle Modern Design, back with a fun DIY that blends coastal vibes with fall charm. In this tutorial, we’re saving a less-loved board with a little creativity, some bold stain blending, and the versatile Sunflower and Vine Pattern Stencil from Essential Stencil’s Fall Collection. Let's get blending!

    Blended Coastal Fall Sign

    Materials:

    • Minwax Water-Based Stains – Chartreuse & Oasis
    • White water-based stain or acrylic paint
    • Essential Stencil’s Sunflower and Vine Pattern Stencil
    • Blending sponge or rag
    • Spray bottle with water
    • Heat gun or blow dryer
    • Board or wood blank
    • Gloves (optional)

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Start by applying white paint all over your board using a sponge to create a soft base. Blow dry it completely.

Step 2: Stain one half of the board using Minwax Chartreuse — a bold, highlighter-like yellow-green.

Step 3: Stain the other half of the board with Minwax Oasis, a cool coastal blue.

Step 4: While stains are still damp, lightly spritz the surface with water to make blending easier.

Step 5: Blend from the center outward where the two stains meet. Use soft back-and-forth motions until you achieve a smooth ombré look. Let dry completely.

Step 6: Once dry, place the stencil on each corner of the board and dab on white acrylic paint to form a soft floral border.

Step 7: Lightly dry brush white paint along the edges and across the board to give it a distressed, coastal-fall finish.

Final Result: A beautifully blended background with delicate stencil details—perfect for layering transfers or displaying as-is!

    Helpful Tips:

    • Use a water spritzer to soften harsh blending lines between stains.
    • Dry brush white paint to create a subtle aged effect on colorful backgrounds.
    • Layer with a transfer or quote to turn your background into a finished sign!
