Country Roads & Angel Wings 🤍🚚 A Heartfelt Memorial Wood Sign Tutorial

    Hello friends 💛

There’s something incredibly special about creating a handmade piece that honors someone’s memory. When store-bought just doesn’t feel personal enough, layering meaningful elements together can truly tell a story.

In this project, Melissa Miller of Millers Rustic Sawmill creates a heartfelt memorial sign featuring an angel wing, a rustic vintage truck, and the timeless phrase “Country Roads Take Me Home.” The natural wood grain and layered details make this piece both personal and powerful.

If you’re looking to create a remembrance gift that reflects someone’s love of country living, trucks, and simple things — this tutorial is for you.

    Memorial Country Roads Sign

Step 1: Stencil the Angel Wing

Start by prepping your board, making sure the surface is clean and completely dry.

Position the angel wing from the Cardinals Appear and Angel Wings Sign Stencils pack onto the board. For this project, we’re using just one wing and placing it toward the lower corner so it softly flows off the edge.

Secure your stencil with painter’s tape to prevent movement.

Using a stencil brush, apply metallic copper paint with a gentle pouncing motion. Since the openings are larger, take your time and offload your brush well to prevent bleed-through.

Tip: This layer should remain soft and subtle. It’s meant to sit in the background, not overpower the design.

Step 2: Apply the Vintage Truck Transfer

Select and cut out your preferred truck design from the Rustic Vintage Truck Rub-on Transfers pack.

Place the transfer along the jagged edge of the board so it looks like the truck is driving off the sign. This adds movement and personality to the piece.

Using the Essential Rub-On Transfer Tool, firmly burnish the design until fully adhered.

Teaching Moment: Don’t limit transfers or stencils to specific seasons. Mixing elements creates meaningful year-round pieces.

    Step 3: Stencil the Phrase

Position the Country Roads Stencil across the center, slightly overlapping both the wing and the truck.

Using black paint and a stencil brush, offload your brush and apply the first coat. Allow it to dry slightly, then apply a second coat for bold, readable lettering.

Bold lettering ensures the phrase remains the focal point.

    Step 4: Apply Wood Finish

Once dry, apply wood honey stain or finish oil across the board. This step enriches the wood tones and beautifully blends all the layered elements together.

Pro Tip: Not sure how your finish will look? Lightly wipe your board with a damp cloth first to preview how the grain will deepen.

Step 5: Add Highlight to the Wing

If your finish deepens the wing more than expected, reposition the stencil and lightly apply white paint using a very dry brush technique.

This creates a soft highlight and subtle dimension without overpowering the design.

    Helpful Tips:
    • Always offload your brush to prevent bleed-through.
    • Layering adds meaning — don’t be afraid to overlap elements.
    • Seal your entire board, including edges and back, for a professional finish.
    • Touch up lettering with a small detail brush if needed.

    Final Reveal

The angel wing sits softly in the background while the truck and phrase remain the focus. The natural wood grain still shines through — adding warmth and authenticity.

Handmade memorial pieces allow you to reflect someone’s personality in a way that feels truly personal.
