Create Your Own Primitive Salt Box Houses

Hi friends! It's Melissa Miller from Millers Rustic Sawmill, and I'm so excited to share this charming DIY featuring the new Saltbox House Stencil Set and Primitive Words Stencil Set. In this project, we transform chunky wood blocks into adorable primitive-style salt box houses. Let’s jump into the details below!

    Jump to:

    Materials Needed

    Stencil the First House

Start with the tallest block. Tape down the rectangle house base stencil from the Saltbox House set and fill it in using a muted brick red paint.

Once dry, overlay the coordinating roof and window stencil and stencil it in black for sharp contrast.

Helpful Tip: For large fill areas, less offloading is needed—just brush directly onto the block from the stencil center outward.

    Stencil the Second House

Use olive green to paint the base of the second house design. Allow it to dry before applying the top stencil.

Add windows and roof using black paint to bring depth and contrast.

Helpful Tip: If the wood is unfinished, colors will soak in slightly—opt for bold or deeper tones for strong visibility.

    Stencil the Third House

The final house uses a warm mustard gold as the base. Let this layer dry thoroughly.

Follow with the roof and window details in black for bold definition.

Helpful Tip: Melissa switched sides of the block mid-project to correct color tone—a great example of DIY flexibility.

    Final Touches & Reveal

Add personality with meaningful stenciled words. Melissa chose “Gather” for the maroon house and “Faith” for the gold house using the Primitive Words Set.

    Here’s the finished trio!

Helpful Tip: Melissa suggests batch creating these to sell or gift—prep multiple blocks and stencil all at once for easy production.
