Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Prepare Your Wood Round

Start with an 18-inch round wooden board that has been stained with Minwax Transparent Stain. Make sure the stain has completely dried before beginning your project.

Step 2: Stencil the Welcome Design

Position the top stencil from the Oak & Acorn Welcome Door Hanger Stencil on the upper half of your board, making sure it is centered. Using Golden Straw paint and a stencil brush, apply light coats with a gentle swirling motion.

Allow the paint to dry, then add a second coat only to the word "Welcome" to make it stand out.

Step 3: Add the Bottom Design

Position the second stencil on the lower half of the board and stencil using the same Golden Straw paint to keep the design cohesive.

Step 4: Create Beautiful Fall Leaves

Using a clean stencil brush, lightly blend Jack O'Lantern over portions of the leaves while allowing some of the Golden Straw to remain visible.

Add Burnt Orange to selected areas for additional depth.

Finish by lightly blending Tuscan Red onto a few leaves to create a rich, layered autumn ombrรฉ effect.

Step 6: Add the Side Sentiment

Position the "Friends and Family Gather Here" stencil from the Welcome Autumn Stencil Set on the side of the board.

Stencil only "Gather Here" using Golden Straw.

Helpful Tips

  • Offload your stencil brush before every application. Less paint produces cleaner stencil lines.
  • Build color gradually with several light coats instead of one heavy coat.
  • Use a heat tool between layers to speed up drying.
  • Blend the leaf colors gradually to create a natural ombrรฉ effect.
  • Don't worry about making every leaf identicalโ€”natural variation makes the design even more beautiful.
  • Allow each section to dry before repositioning your stencil.
