Create a Vintage Floral Clock with the New 16" Clock Stencil

There’s something so special about a handmade clock that doubles as home dΓ©cor. In this project, Melissa Bradshaw of Junk and Craft Treasures created a beautiful vintage-inspired floral clock using our new 16" Clock Set, gorgeous Burgundy & Rust florals, and a touch of distressed charm.

The layered transfers, weathered stain, and subtle script details come together to create a timeless piece that can be customized for any style or season.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Paint the Board

Begin by painting your 16" round board with white paint. Allow it to dry completely, then apply a second coat for full, even coverage.

Paint the round board white

Tip: Leaving a little of the edge exposed creates an even more rustic finish once the stain is added.

Step 2: Sand for a Smooth Finish

Once the paint is dry, lightly sand the entire board to smooth the surface. Wipe away any dust or residue with a clean cloth.

Step 3: Create a Distressed Edge

Apply a walnut-colored water-based stain around the edges of the board. Wipe away some of the stain to achieve a weathered, aged appearance and let it dry completely.

Add stain to the edges

Step 4: Add the Floral Transfers

Cut out your favorite florals and butterflies from the Burgundy & Rust Floral Set. Arrange them around the board, keeping the center mostly open for the clock mechanism. Once you're happy with the layout, burnish the transfers into place.

Apply floral transfers

Don't be afraid to move pieces around until you love the layout. This is where your clock really starts to come to life.

Step 5: Stencil the Numbers

Using the 16" Clock Set, position the numbers evenly around the board. The 12 and 6 make it easy to align everything perfectly. Fill in the numbers with dark brown paint using a stencil brush and carefully remove the stencils.

For added dimension, stencil directly over portions of the transfers for a layered vintage look.

Step 6: Add Vintage Script Details

Lightly stencil the smaller script design across the board using the same dark brown paint. Keep the application soft and faded to create subtle background texture.

Step 7: Install the Clock Mechanism

Drill the center hole if needed and install your clock mechanism according to the package instructions. Secure all the pieces in place and make sure the hands move freely.

Finish the piece with a matte sealer to protect your design and preserve the vintage look.

Helpful Tips

  • Apply two coats of paint for the best coverage.
  • Light sanding between coats creates a smooth professional finish.
  • Wipe back the stain to create natural-looking age and character.
  • Keep the center open while arranging your transfers.
  • Layering stenciled elements over transfers adds beautiful dimension.
  • A matte sealer keeps the piece looking authentically vintage.
