Make a Rustic Tic-Tac-Toe Game with Melissa Miller

Hi friends! It's Melissa Miller from Millers Rustic Sawmill, and I'm here with a charming DIY gift idea you can make in an evening: a rustic, hand-stenciled tic-tac-toe game! This simple project is full of farmhouse charm and makes a perfect handmade gift for the holidays or any occasion. Let's dive in!

    Table of Contents

    Materials Needed

    • Tic Tac Board 12x12 4pc Stencil
    • 12x16 wood board (birch plywood or similar)
    • Eight small wood blocks for Xs and Os
    • Stencil brush
    • Painter’s tape
    • Black acrylic paint
    • Gel or regular wood stain (Early American preferred)
    • Chip brush or shop rag
    • Gloves (for staining)

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Position Your Stencil

Tape down the grid stencil from the Tic Tac Board stencil pack securely on your 12x16 board.

    2. Stencil the Game Board

Using black paint and your stencil brush, gently dab the paint onto the stencil. Let dry completely.

    3. Create Xs and Os

Use the same stencil pack to paint 4 Xs and 4 Os onto small wood blocks with black paint.

    4. Add Rustic Stain to Game Pieces

Once dry, apply a light coat of Early American stain using a chip brush or rag. Wipe off excess and let dry.

    5. Stain the Board

To give the whole piece a cohesive look, apply the same stain over the game board, brushing lightly over the painted areas for an aged finish.

    6. Final Reveal

Let everything dry completely before assembling. Now you're ready for a stylish round of tic-tac-toe anytime!

    Helpful Tips

    • Always tape your stencil down to prevent shifting during painting.
    • Let paint fully dry before applying stain to avoid smearing.
    • Use a gel stain for more control, or opt for traditional stains like Early American for a softer, rustic look.
    • If stain goes on too dark, gently wipe it back or sand lightly after drying.

This handmade tic-tac-toe game is a beautiful, personal gift or cozy addition to your home decor. Ready to make your own?
