Create a rustic, layered wood sign with soft coastal tones and a touch of western charm. In this project, Essential Stencil ambassador Amanda Dillon of Mettle Modern Design shares her signature technique for blending stains and combining stencils with rub-on transfers for a beautifully cohesive finish.
This piece features a custom-toned background, a flowing script stencil, and a detailed horse transferโperfect for farmhouse, coastal, or rustic home dรฉcor.

Start by applying a white stain to your wood panel using a sponge, covering both the front and sides. Lightly mist the surface with water to help with blending.
Tip: Donโt worry about perfection hereโthis layer helps soften everything that comes next.

While the board is still damp, apply gray stain and blend it across the surface. Add more water if needed for a smoother finish.

Next, use a separate sponge to apply brown stain. Blend all tones together until you achieve a warm, custom look. Allow the board to dry completely.
Tip: Trust the process. The tones may look uneven at first, but theyโll come together beautifully as they dry.

Once dry, lightly sand the entire board to create a smooth, even surface for your design.

Position the Darling Be a Wildflower stencil along the side of the board. Using a stencil brush, apply black paint to fill in the design. Let dry completely.
Tip: Use a light tapping motion with your stencil brush to prevent paint bleed.

Cut out your chosen horse design from the Wild Rose Ranch Rub-On Transfer Set. Place it in the bottom corner and use the Essential Transfer Tool to burnish it until fully adhered.
Tip: Work slowly and check as you go to ensure all details transfer cleanly.

Lightly sand the surface again to soften the stencil and transfer, helping everything blend seamlessly into the background.

Using a small amount of black paint, lightly brush across the surface and edges to create a soft, aged effect.
Tip: Less is moreโbuild up the distressing gradually for the best result.

This finished piece brings together layered stains, soft distressing, and mixed design elements for a rustic yet refined look. The combination of stencil and transfer adds depth and movement, making it a standout dรฉcor piece.
